Arizona State on SI gives opinion on pertinent topics out of spring practices below.

Cam Dyer Has Been Most Improved of Spring

The redshirt freshman quarterback put tantalizing talent on display during the last five games of the 2025 season in which he served as a backup to Jeff Sims, but he remained on the outside looking in as far as the position battle goes.

Dyer struggled during the early stages of spring practices at times, but has come along over the last week. The former four-star recruit made several impressive runs as a result of scrambling out of the pocket off-script. His arm talent continues to shine through as well, and he has made strides in connectivity with receivers.

Dyer may not win the battle, but he has laid claim to being the singular most improved player from week one to week three.

Depth Chart Playing Out on Defense

Many positions are open for business when speaking on depth chart positioning, as a majority of incumbent starters from 2025 have moved on.

Linebacker and boundary corner are unlikely to be spots where there is much competition as far as who comes out as the starting player. Owen Long has been every bit as strong as advertised after transferring to ASU from Colorado State last season - bringing comparisons to Keyshaun Elliott in terms of approach into light. Martell Hughes is poised to be a full-time starter in 2026 after breaking out last season in the form of making multiple game-saving plays.

As for boundary corner, Rodney Bimage Jr. and Ashton Stamps are very much building up the most pronounced cases to start on the outside. Bimage experienced a breakout season in his own right last season and has earned his stripes as Arizona State's top NFL prospect out of the secondary. Stamps has been the single biggest standout for the Sun Devils on the defensive side of the ball throughout the spring, as he has been an elite performer on a regular basis.

Quarterback, edge rusher, tight end, and nearly every position on the offensive line are open for business as well in the weeks ahead.
