Razorbacks Still Don't Figure Things Out in Loss to Oklahoma

None of this is new for those who have seen last few years with Musselman's Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Too many people were talking about Arkansas coach Eric Musselman getting thrown out of a loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. It was probably due to frustration as anything he obviously was saying to the officials.

"I have no comments about the refs at all," was all he would say about it because he wasn't willing to pay for anything. Besides, he might have to coach a game they are calling sometime down the road. It may be a good bet he was more upset with the Razorbacks.

"The team right now is not playing with the same personality as our past teams the last four years," Musselman said. "We’ve got to get a lot better. We play three games in the next 20 days. Rotations, roles, all those things. There’s going to be some changes."

He didn't give any clues to that. This team has so many issues it's probably impossible to read a lot for indications of what he deems to be the most important. "There’s a lot of things we have to clean up for sure," Musselman said.

Start with the shooting ... or lack of getting them to fall, to be more accurate. This team fires up some really bad shots. A lot of that is probably due to feeling the need to do something. Call it panic shots. This is not what anyone expected in the preseason. defensively is all over the place and not really consistent.

"We’ll go back, we’ll watch the film," Musselman said. "Positive is tonight we finally created some steals. So that’s a positive. Finishing at the rim is a huge issue, and not only not finishing at the rim, but falling down. Now transition defense [has been affected]. It’s been going on all year. We’ve shown film, we’ve done drills. We’ve got to get a lot better organizing on the floor from the point guard spot."

That doesn't sound particularly good for El Ellis, who started the game Saturday with a three-pointer, then sort of disappeared. He played nine minutes, getting five points, but there must have been something that wasn't happening because he got yanked and didn't see much court time. Just don't ask about getting it fixed anytime soon.

"I’m just worried about trying to have a good practice on Monday," Musselman said. "I mean, how confident is somebody to get it. We’ve got to get better than where we are right now." He sounds like he's baffled the players just don't get "it" being what they are being coached to do. They better start getting "it" really soon.

Us old folks can remember what Lou Holtz said in a miserable 1980 football season that ended up with a 6-5 record of three straight seasons compiling a 30-5-1 record.

"I don't know where this team is headed, it may be going down the tube," Holtz told us one afternoon. "I can tell you they will be one miserable team doing it." It wasn't hard to figure out what he was talking about. Musselman may be thinking the same thing.
