Takeaways from Auburn basketball’s overtime loss at Alabama

In this story:
The Auburn Tigers took on Crimson Criminals Wednesday night in Coleman Coliseum. Auburn led for the first 38 minutes. The Tigers blew a 17 point lead in the last 11 minutes. Neither team was able to get a bucket late, and the game headed for overtime. Much of Auburn’s team fouled out during halftime as the Tigers continue to struggle with officiating and foul disparity. Why Auburn can’t get obvious fouls called under the basket has been a mystery this season. Coach Bruce pearl was visibly upset in the postgame interview about the officiating, and he should be. He said he was tired of Auburn getting SMASHED down low with no fouls called. KD Johnson was clearly fouled on Auburn’s last possession, but this was just one of many instances where fouls were called only one way. It is rumored SEC officials don’t like this Auburn basketball team. Whatever the case they will struggle to win if they can’t get calls. Here are a few takeaways from tonight’s game.
Auburn shot well in the first half
The Tigers shot 54% from the floor and 75% from three in the first half. It was amazing. Tre Donaldson came alive and scored 7 quick points on three shots. Where a scoring Donaldson came from I don’t know, but this team needs him to contribute desperately. Jaylin Williams had an amazing first half hitting two threes at the start of the game. He is becoming a potential centerpiece on offense, and Auburn may be best when he is heavily involved.
Bama’s guilt is clearly getting to them
It was evident early. Something was off with this Bama team. They looked like they were harboring something. It was almost like they refused to punish two players potentially involved in a late night murder and the dread and guilt caught up to them. Look at the facial expressions of the players and coaches. They look haunted. They have sold their soul and voided their integrity for the sake of this season. It’s embarrassing, but most of all sad. This is the University of Alabama.
Turnovers were plentiful
The Tigers had 10 first half turnovers. They did not take care of the ball well at all. Fortunately, Bama had 9 turnovers in the first half and Auburn was able to maintain a lead. KD Johnson hitting his first three 3 pointers certainly helped the Tigers tonight. Johni Broome also had a solid game before fouling out with a few minutes left.

Every time he speaks or explains things it’s just worse. Every single time. Incredible that the Bama admin hasn’t put a complete PR muzzle on this man at this point. https://t.co/BbPmcN4IpL
