Takeaways from Auburn basketball’s 78-74 win over Ole Miss

The Tigers move to 19-9 on the season after picking up an important win.

The Auburn Tigers took on the Ole Miss Rebels in Neville Arena Wednesday night. It was an exciting game with several lead changes throughout. Auburn tried to run away with it many times throughout the game, but the Rebels clawed back every time. Ultimately the Tigers prevailed and earned a much needed win. Here are a few takeaways from todays game.

Johni Broome continues to be Auburn’s most consistent player

Broome was 8-13 with 19 points and even hit a 3 pointer tonight. He looks like a professional out there. He’s efficient and concise. Walker Kessler really spoiled Auburn fans last year. Broome is continuing that, and Coach Bruce Pearl is really starting to turn Auburn into one of the premier places to play center in college basketball. Jaylin Williams and Wendell Green also played well tonight. Williams had another very efficient stat line going 4-7 for 12, and Green led Auburn in scoring with 23 points.

NCAA Tournament Hopes

This Auburn team should make the NCAA tournament, but really needs at least one win in their next three games. The Tigers play at Kentucky this Saturday and have a big opportunity to get another quad 1 win. Auburn has lost a lot of close games lately, but is still ranked fairly high in the Kenpom and NET rankings. You really don’t want to leave it in the committee’s hands, and Auburn can control their own destiny down the stretch.

Nightmare in TTown

The biggest story in the college basketball world is new information in the tragic murder of Jamea Jonae Harris on January 15th. It is being reported and text messages have revealed that Alabama’s star player Brandon Miller brought the gun used for the murder to his teammate in a late night request when his teammate got mad at someone. This is shocking news. What has been even more shocking for everyone in the is Alabama’s coach and administration acting like it’s not a big deal and not interested in admitting Miller did anything wrong with Nate Oats saying “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Bringing a murder weapon to the scene of an ongoing altercation is a big deal. It’s also being reported that both Miller’s and fellow teammate Jaden Bradley’s cars blocked the victim’s car from the road before she was shot. There is a lot to come of this very serious murder investigation. We are yet to find out if Miller will be arrested and criminally charged. No one in the national media seems to be able to understand why Miller is still playing or why Alabama would continue to allow him to represent the University during this investigation. Others more familiar with the program are not surprised. With the University of Alabama, this is par for the course.
