Auburn Commitment Cam Coleman Prospect Evaluation

5-star wide receiver Cam Coleman is fun to watch

With Cam Coleman committing to the Auburn Tigers and their 2024 recruiting class, it's time to gain a better understanding of what this young man can do on the football field. Here's a breakdown of Coleman's senior highlights.

Cam Coleman

Size: 6-foot-4, 190 pounds

Position: Wide Receiver

High School: Phenix City (Ala.) Central

Recruiting: The #12 player by the On3 overall recruiting rankings, he’s holding offers from a who’s who list of college football programs. Auburn, Bama, Georgia, LSU, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Clemson, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, and Penn State.

He made his original commitment to Texas A&M before flipping to Auburn on Dec. 1, 2023.

Frame: Think of a 2-guard in college basketball; long, lanky, and lean. Still relatively thin, Coleman’s current size at 190 pounds should push 210 pounds in less than two years.

Athleticism: Most importantly, Coleman’s lateral movements are rare for a player at his height. He often makes defenders miss and gains extra yards even when surrounded by defenders; his route running is accentuated by his ability to break down and make sharp cuts. Again, he’s 6-foot-4. That cannot be understated.

That same trait helps Coleman release off the line of scrimmage and beat bump-and-run coverage or anything else a defense uses to slow him down. There’s still more to like about Coleman’s athleticism.

Natural leaper; makes it look effortless. Open-field speed resembles a player that one would generally translate as being 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, like a slot receiver.

Catching the Football: The timing and rhythm of Coleman’s acrobatic catches are simply a blast to watch. He creates sideline toe-taps and over-the-shoulder receptions that are hard to define with mere words. Here’s something to consider about the players he’s accomplishing these catches against.

Alabama high school football is tremendous. Coleman goes against and competes with some of the best defensive backs in America. That means contested catches are a must to be a great prospect.

The number of “Wow!” plays from his highlights – when Coleman has a defensive back right next to him – provides perspective as to why his offer list is elite.

Toughness: There are many plays where Coleman takes a hit and/or Mother Earth is not so kind when he hits the ground. Either way, Coleman gets up and goes about his business. Football is a brutal game and Coleman plays through the bumps and bruises.

Coleman's Big Plays After the Catch: To add to Coleman’s toughness, he certainly breaks tackles and fights for those tough yards that help an offense stay out of those generally tricky third-down-and-short or fourth-down-and-short situations.

When it’s just Coleman versus a defensive back who’s attempting to tackle him, it will be rare that the future Auburn receiver does not at least gain a yard or two after contact. Yes, Coleman often jukes a defensive back and gains big yards, too.

Key Highlights From Coleman’s Senior Film: As for Coleman’s highlights, here are some of the key moments to watch.

0:00 - Watch the first play multiple times. Just watch it (link further down) as Coleman snags the football with one hand.

0:19 - Post route with interference; Coleman still catches the football.

1:19 - Another post. Coleman eats up the cushion and splits the double team to get open.

1:45 - Coleman’s length is on full display as he catches a fade pass for a score.

2:36 - Corner route where Coleman does an excellent job of keeping his feet in bounds for a touchdown.

3:06 - Coleman reaches back for the football and catches a touchdown.

4:12 - Here’s some of that toughness mentioned above.

4:35 - Over-the-shoulder catch.

5:14 - Quick hands and a toe-tap.

5:57 - Works an inside-out route concept.

Here are Coleman’s senior season highlights. Well worth one's time to check it out.
