Nick Saban, one of the greatest coaches of all time has retired, per Chris Low of ESPN.

The Alabama head coach is widely regarded as one of if not the best college football coach ever.

Saban won seven national titles, 11 SEC championships, one MAC championship, 12 SEC West division titles, won the Paul "Bear Bryant" Award twice, was Walter Camp Coach of the Year twice, and was SEC Coach of the Year five times.

This announcement comes as shocking news to the college football landscape, as there was no indication that Saban would be retiring before the announcement today.

He finished with a 292-71-1 all-time record as a head coach with Toledo, Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama. He went 15-17 as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2006 before taking the Alabama job.

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze responded to Saban's retirement on Twitter.

"Hard to express how much Nick and Ms Terri have meant to Jill and I as friends and you have forever set the mark for many to chase in this profession. Enjoy Retirement!!"

Freeze will now go head-to-head against a new Crimson Tide head coach every season. Oregon's Dan Lanning seems like the primary candidate for the Tide, but nothing has been made official.
