'Auburn went to work quickly,' beat writer believes Payton Thorne is coming to the Tigers
Payton Thorne to Auburn seems like a done deal.
Thorne, a former two-year starter at Michigan State, is currently projected to land at Auburn after entering the transfer portal. College Transfer Portal (@CollegeFBPortal on Twitter) released a tweet on Wednesday afternoon claiming that sources told them "Michigan State transfer QB, Payton Thorne, is heading to Auburn. Announcement coming soon."
Brian Stultz of Auburnsports.com quote tweeted the post and furthered the excitement. " This is who Hugh Freeze has wanted since he (Thorne) entered (the portal) on Sunday," Stultz wrote. "Auburn went to work quickly."
Stultz went further in the replies, saying that the announcement isn't public "yet," and that he's "99.9%" sure Thorne is coming to the Plains.
The Tigers have had ten players depart from the program within the last few weeks, including three backup linebackers:
Quarterback TJ Finley
Wide receiver Tar'Varish Dawson
Wide receiver Landen King
Offensive lineman Colby Smith
Defensive lineman Jeffrey M'ba
Defensive lineman Tobechi Okoli
Defensive end Dylan Brooks
Linebacker Kameron Brown
Linebacker Desmond Tisdol
Linebacker Powell Gordon
Auburn has pulled in an impressive haul thus far during Hugh Freeze's first season on the Plains, currently sitting at No. 3 nationally in 247Sports' transfer portal class rankings.
