An Auburn quarterback not named Payton Thorne is receiving a lot of high praise from a D-I coach.

Trent Dilfer, head coach of the UAB Blazers and formerly of Lipscomb Academy, spoke to AL.com about his former quarterback and current Auburn signee Hank Brown.

According to Dilfer, Auburn's freshman QB has the potential to develop into something special.

“He does need to get bigger and stronger, and he knows that,” Dilfer said. “But Auburn has great resources to do that. He’ll get bigger, stronger and fast. He’ll become more of a man here shortly. He has all the skills it takes to become an NFL quarterback."

Hank Brown told Auburn Daily that he is eager to start working under Freeze at Auburn.

"I am excited to get down to Auburn to learn and get developed from some of the best quarterback coaches in the country," Brown told Auburn Daily. "I think my first year especially with be pivotal in that process to help me succeed. I am excited to learn from the other quarterbacks as well and compete with them. I am a competitor and my favorite thing to do is compete."

During his senior season at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, Brown completed 73.3% of his passes for 3,264 yards and 47 passing touchdowns, leading Lipscomb to an undefeated record and a D2-AA state title.

“He’s phenomenal,” Dilfer said. “His instincts are second to none. This is not about me, but that football team last year in Tennessee is the finest football team to ever play Tennessee high school football. And Hank is a huge reason for that. His ability to solve problems, his ability to distribute the football, handle critical situations, handle a week of pressure and high expectations was just phenomenal.”

Brown joins the 2023 Auburn football quarterback room as a three-star freshman.

Originally committed to Liberty, the 6-foot-4, 195 pound signal-caller won't be involved in the race this season, but should expect to compete with 2024 four-star commit Walker White in future seasons.
