Auburn basketball needs more scoring from its point guards next season

The transfer portal will patch holes in Auburn's basketball roster.

Auburn's 2023-24 basketball season was filled with fun memories, including an SEC Tournament Championship, but it came to a tragic end with a first-round loss to Yale in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers had one of the best frontcourts in college basketball a season ago, but the guards were problematic at times. Towards the end of the season, shooting guard Denver Jones heated up from beyond the three-point line, which is a big reason why Auburn was able to win the SEC Tournament in Nashville.

While Jones got hot late at the two-guard position, the Tigers didn't get much scoring from their point guards throughout the season. Tre Donaldson and Aden Holloway combined to average 14 points per game this season, which isn't enough for a Burce Pearl-coached team.

While Auburn did have an elite frontcourt, with Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams doing most of the damage, you would have loved to see more scoring from the point guards.

Clearly, Coach Pearl wants this issue fixed, as he is actively looking for scoring point guards in the transfer portal.

Donaldson has already entered his name in the portal and is looking for a new place to call home. This will open a spot for the staff to get a point guard.

Auburn is after former Furman guard JP Pegues, who averaged 18.4 points per game for the Paladins while also dishing 4.8 assists per game.

If Coach Pearl and the staff were able to land Pegues, these issues regarding the point guards' scoring would be resolved.
