Title Rematch? Baylor vs. Gonzaga in Non-Conference Could Happen This Season

The last time the Bears played Gonzaga, they steamrolled them in the 2021 National Championship for the first title in program history

Given the high standards of success that are now the new normal in Waco, the Baylor Bears and coach Scott Drew are certainly disappointed following an early second-round exit at the hands of national runner-up North Carolina in March.

But a chance at reminiscing on the championship success of year ago could come quickly this upcoming season. Baylor and Gonzaga are finalizing a deal to play a neutral-site game as part of the non-conference schedule for 2022-23, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Should the deal get finalized, the game would be played in December at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The game would be making up for a cancelled matchup between the two programs that was originally scheduled for Dec. 5, 2020.

There is currently no deadline or timetable on when the announcement could become official.

Regardless, the game could feature of matchup of two top-10 programs, with the potential of both teams being ranked in the top five by the time December rolls around.

Baylor will be looking for another win over Gonzaga after ending the Bulldogs' hopes of an undefeated season with a dominant 86-70 win in the 2020 championship game.

Former Bear and current Utah Jazz guard Jared Butler led the team in the championship win with 22 points, seven assists, and three rebounds. He was the focal point of a talented Baylor backcourt that also included Davion Mitchell, who would go on to be the No. 9 overall selection in the NBA Draft following the title game.

Adam Flagler, who had 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench in the title game, announced Wednesday that he has withdrawn his name from the 2022 NBA Draft and will return to Waco for his senior season.
