Baylor's Grant Miller Focused on 'Experience' as 2022 Season Looms

Sixth-year senior lineman impressed with entire offensive unit on upcoming Bears football team

Grant Miller came to Baylor with a mission.

A sixth-year senior offensive lineman out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a second-year player for coach Dave Aranda and the Bears after transferring from Vanderbilt, Miller feels confident heading into the upcoming college football season.

"It feels good to have a lot of veterans back on the offensive line," Miller said. "The main thing about it is a lot of us were new. We've got some new freshmen in now so it's good to take guys underneath our wings. I'd really just say how comfortable we are with each other. It's just kind of the synergy or the chemistry we kind of have. So I think that's the biggest thing is having older guys, especially now that we've had some experience together too."

Regardless of being a longtime college athlete, Miller feels being a transfer student is very similar to being a freshman in college.

"Coming in as a transfer, it's not quite the same as coming in as a freshman, but I draw a lot of similarities," Miller said. "You're trying to figure out your role on the team, trying to figure out what your coaches want from you. Just kind of fitting in, being a part of the system and the culture. I think whenever you get a player in their second year, no matter if you're a second-year sophomore or a fifth-year senior who's a grad transfer, having another year within the program makes that much more of a difference, especially in a position like offensive line."

Miller, who has been named to the 2022 Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team by Phil Steele and the 2022 Preseason All-Big 12 Third Team by Athlon, also views this year's Baylor running back room as having an infinite ceiling.

"I see a lot of talent, I see a lot of high ceilings," Miller said. "I think the ceiling's really high for these guys. I think they're eager to learn and I think they've got the right coaching staff and the right strengths staff to succeed."

The 6-4, 312-pound offensive lineman, who has appeared in 45 games with 30 starts in his collegiate career, has complete faith in quarterback Blake Shapen as well.

"I think it's just this little bit of swagger and confidence," Miller said. "I don't know if that's just kind of the baseball player thing in him but you know when he comes in the huddle, you feel like there's a certain amount of calm, kind of swag confidence that comes with Blake."
