Back in Black (and Gold): Baylor RB Abram Smith Signs UDFA Deal With the New Orleans Saints

Following an impressive 2021 season, Smith has signed with the Saints.

Baylor running back Abram Smith will once again don the black and gold, as he signed an undrafted free agent deal with New Orleans Saints following the 2022 NFL Draft.

Of course, the Bears do not wear black and gold themselves, but rather Smith wore black and gold when he was torturing defenses at the high school level as a member of the Abilene High Eagles.

Smith was nearly unstoppable during his time at Abilene High despite only being a three-star recruit and the 132nd ranked player in the state of Texas. In his four years as an Eagle Smith would rush for a school-record 4,955 yards while adding 77 touchdowns on the ground.

Once he got to Baylor, Smith would take a medical redshirt for the 2017 season. During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, he would get 12 total carries, not seeing the field much before switching positions to linebacker in 2020, where he would play five games.

However, once he moved back to running back in 2021, he showed exactly why he was such a coveted recruit for the Bears in 2017.

The 2021 season saw Smith explode onto the college football scene across the country. Smith would carry the ball 257 times, racking up 1,601 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, which was good enough to earn him second team All-Big 12.

As an undrafted free agent, there is no guarantee that Smith will ultimately make the roster. However, don't rule out the Abilene kid from making a name for himself in minicamp and showing the Saints he is someone they need on their roster come the start of the season.
