BU concludes record-setting semester with 324 Academic Champions, excellent APR

Baylor Athletics garnered high praise in Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), it was announced on Tuesday, June 14.

The APR is a measure used to track student-athletes chances of graduation and teams that fail to achieve an APR score of 930 (which is equivalent to a 50-percent graduation rate) may be penalized; a perfect score is 1,000.

According to BaylorBears.com, eight teams -- including men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track and field, women's cross country, women's golf, women's track and field and volleyball had perfect one-year scores of 1,000.

Baylor's overall four-year rate for 2020-21 is 983 and the department holds a single-year average of 980. Since it's inception, no BU sports program have been penalized.

The APR news comes on the heels of Baylor Athletics concluding a record-setting spring semester with 324 Academic Champions.

The 61-percent mark of 324 Academic Champions surpasses the previous record of 308 set last semester at Baylor.

"Our student-athletes never cease to amaze me," Associate AD of Academic Services Ramone Cooper told BaylorBears.com. "I was unsure how we could top our record-setting fall term, but the students have done it again. We pride ourselves on 'Preparing Champions for Life,' and academic achievement is a big part of that."

Baylor had 87 student-athletes complete the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA and 375 finished with a 3.0 GPA or higher, according to BaylorBears.com.

"To have over one-third of our student-athletes achieve their personal best term GPA is amazing," Director of Academic Services Emily DeRatt said. "We are constantly pushing our students to compete against themselves each semester and try to be better than they were previously, and they continue to rise to the challenge."

Baylor Athletics compiled a 3.32 GPA for the full 2021-22 academic year, with 10 out of 17 sports recording at least a 3.30 team GPA.
