BYU Shoots Lights Out in Big 12 Tournament Win Over UCF

The Cougars made 14 threes in a convincing win over UCF

On Wednesday morning, BYU and UCF tipped off the second round of the Big 12 men's basketball tournament. BYU shot lights out, going 14/30 from three and never trailing in an 87-73 victory. With the win, BYU advances to the quarterfinals where they will take on 4-seed Texas Tech for a chance to advance to the semifinals.

The Cougars got off to a quick start against UCF, leading 21-3 after the first six minutes. The Knights clawed their way back into this game behind star guard Darius Johnson. In the final minute of the first half, Johnson hit two consecutive threes to cut BYU's lead from 15 to 9 at the halftime break.

Johnson stayed hot, trimming BYU's lead to 3 with 13 minutes remaining after he hit another pair of threes. BYU, however, went on another run and kept the Knights at arm's length. After Johnson cut the lead to 3, BYU went on a 12-0 run over the next few minutes to extend the lead back to 15. The Cougars never looked back and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Wednesday's win was a team effort. Every player that played scored points and nobody scored more than 14. Fousseyni Traore had 14 points on 4/5 shooting. Dallin Hall and Richie Saunders scored 13 apiece. Trevin Knell had 12 and Noah Waterman and Spencer Johson scored 9 each.
