On Thursday, BYU announced the hiring of TJ Woods as offensive line coach and run game coordinator. Woods, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience, was most recently at Georgia Southern as a member of Clay Helton's staff.

Woods has connections to the state of Utah. He was the offensive line coach at Utah State during Gary Anderson's first tenure with the Aggies. Woods followed Anderson to Wisconsin in 2013 where he helped coach one of the most dominant rushing attacks in college football.

After Wisconsin, Woods followed Anderson once again to Oregon State. At Oregon State, Woods was on the staff during the same time that Kalani Sitake was the defensive coordinator.

After Oregon State, he spent time at Western Kentucky, UNLV and Georgia Southern.

Woods takes over an BYU offensive line unit that struggled in 2023. The Cougars ranked 119th in rush offense and they took a step back in pass protection. Talent wasn't the issue, at least not on the surface. BYU had an NFL talent in Kingsley Suamataia at left tackle and veterans like Connor Pay and Paul Maile on the inside.

Woods will be tasked with turning around a unit that is only a few years removed from being arguably the best position group on the team.

First, he will have to fill a few roster spots from the transfer portal. The Cougars need to add a few more players along the offensive line for next season.
