BYU Signs JUCO Tight End Ray Paulo

On Wednesday, BYU announced the signing of Allan Hancock College tight end Jay Paulo. Paulo spent three years at the junior college level at Allan Hancock, starting with his freshman season in 2018. He played on defense that year, appearing in seven games as a true freshman. After that season, he left to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He returned home and used his redshirt in 2021. As a redshirt sophomore in 2022, he had 26 receptions for 379 yards and four touchdowns. He also spent some time on defense where tallied one sack.

Listed at 6'3, Paulo is a native of Pago Pago, American Samoa. He played football, basketball, and soccer in high school. Paulo is a willing blocker and he is athletic enough to do some damage after the catch. In 2022, he had two receptions of over 60 yards.
Paulo joins a BYU tight end unit in 2023 that returns veterans Isaac Rex and Masen Wake. After Rex and Wake, BYU is inexperienced at tight end. He will provide depth and give BYU a new skillset at the position.
Paulo will join the program in time for Fall camp along with fellow tight end Jackson Bowers. Bowers, a four-star signee in the 2023 class, has the potential to see the field early in his BYU career.
