SP+ Predicts BYU's Big 12 Opener at Kansas

After two years of waiting, BYU's inaugural Big 12 game is here. The Cougars are 3-0 and preparing for another road test at Kansas in week four. Kansas is also 3-0 and coming off a 31-24 win over Nevada. This will be only the second game against Kansas in school history. The one and only matchup between these two teams came in 1992 when Kansas beat BYU 23-20.
The game will be the first conference game for both teams. BYU, with a new defensive staff, will put its new and improved defense to the test once again against one of the best quarterbacks in the country and one of the best offenses in the Big 12. Jayhawks quarterback Jalon Daniels was named the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year. SP+, a predictive algorithm created by ESPN's Bill Connelly, cemented its prediction for BYU-Kansas on Sunday.
SP+ gives BYU a 50% chance to pull off the upset and beat Kansas with an expected final score of 30-30. SP+ is expecting a close, high-scoring game that could go either way. SP+ is higher on BYU than the oddsmakers. BYU opened as a 7-8 point underdog depending on the sportsbook.
SP+ is higher on BYU's chances than the ESPN FPI algorithm. FPI gives BYU a 43.5% chance to beat the Jayhwaks.
