Three Roster Needs that BYU Will Address in the Transfer Portal

During the early signing period, BYU addressed a lot of roster needs through the JUCO and high school ranks. The defensive line was among the top needs for 2024, and the defensive staff addressed that needs in spades by signing multiple highly-coveted players. There are still roster needs to address over the next few weeks, primarily on offense. Here are three roster needs that BYU will address through the transfer portal.
1. Quarterback
BYU will add a quarterback from the transfer portal. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said as much during his signing day press conference. The Cougars lose Kedon Slovis to graduation, and Jake Retzlaff committed too many mistakes to be handed the starting job for next season.
The Cougars have already offered a few quarterbacks that ended up at other schools. That hasn't stopped BYU from pursuing other options. It wouldn't be surprising to see BYU add a veteran quarterback soon.
2. Offensive line
The offensive line appeared to be a major position of concern after the 2023 season. There was a very feasible scenario where BYU could lose four of the five starters. Fortunately, Connor Pay and Brayden Keim will return next season and will likely start at center and left tackle, respectively.
Even with Pay and Keim in the fold, the offensive line is a position of need. The Cougars have already offered a few transfer offensive linemen and they will continue to recruit offensive linemen until they add another experienced offensive lineman or two.
3. Running Back
LJ Martin has an incredibly bright future at BYU. As a true freshman, Martin showed that he can be a starting running back in the Big 12. Martin will go into the 2024 season as the projected starter. The depth at running back, however, is a major concern. Running backs take a lot of hits and you need at least three to survive a season.
Behind Martin, BYU has Miles Davis and Hinckley Ropati. Both Davis and Ropati have struggled to stay on the field during their BYU careers. BYU will look to the transfer portal to add a running back or two.
