On Tuesday, California athlete Chance Harrison backed off his BYU verbal commitment. Harrison committed to the Cougars back in September after attending the BYU-Baylor game in person. Since committing to BYU, Harrison has picked up competing offers from the likes of Arizona, Boston College, Washington State, and Colorado State. Harrison announced his de-commitment on social media, where he maintained that he "will continue to communicate with [Coach Gilford] and the staff moving forward."

Harrison is listed as an athlete, but he plays both wide receiver and defensive back for Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, California. It was anticipated that Harrison would play defensive back at BYU.

Since Harrison's commitment, BYU has replaced its defensive staff. When Harrison committed back in September, the BYU defense was coached by Ilaisa Tuiaki and Ed Lamb. Since then, BYU has hired former Weber State head coach Jay Hill.

Without Harrison in the fold, BYU has seven commits in the 2024 class. That list includes Jett Nelson, Siosefa Brown, Ryner Swanson, Dallin Johnson, Enoch Watson, Adney Reid, and Thomas Prassas.

After hosting several top priorities on campus last weekend, BYU is hoping to add to that list in the coming weeks. Included among those top targets on campus last weekend were Kash Dillon, Davis Andrews, Carson Sue'esu'e, Emphraim Asiata, and Faletau Satuala. BYU also hosted top quarterback prospect Maealiuaki Smith on campus a few weekends ago. The Cougars are hoping that a few of them join the 2024 class in the next month.
