This time last year, BYU received an early commitment from 2024 edge/linebacker prospect Adney Reid. Adney prepped at Spanish Fork High School as a freshman before moving to Australia in the Summer of 2021. Adney is the son of former BYU tight end Gabe Reid who is currently serving as the mission president of the Australia Sydney mission. The Reid's moved to Australia in July of 2021 to begin their missionary service. We caught up with Adney to get an update on his BYU commitment and his life in Australia.

"Life has been pretty interesting here in Australia," Reid said. "I mean for starters, school is way harder than back home in Utah. But I think it’s a blessing in disguise because I’ve developed good study habits and have learned to manage my time really well." When he's not studying, Adney spends most of his time training for his future football career and playing basketball and rugby. "As for life outside of school, I am continuing to train for football on my own. Our house is right next to a nice field...basketball and rugby have also kept me busy and are beneficial to me in keeping up my conditioning, explosiveness, and tackling fundamentals...rugby has been a huge help to me in my development as a football player. My tracking on defense and overall tackling has improved and hopefully will continue to progress in the rest of my time here."

Between school, sports, and everything else, Adney doesn't have much down time. "Looking back I don’t even really know how I filled my days in Utah," Adney said. "I get so much done here. We are also pretty close to the beach which is nice, so we try and go there whenever we have spare time. We also spend heaps of time with the missionaries and get to experience really cool stories and backgrounds of different members here in Australia."

Adney comes from a football family. His Dad played at BYU before moving on to the NFL. He is the cousin of Utah's Logan Fano and Spencer Fano. Adney is also the cousin of Gabe Reid and Karene Reid who played for the University of Utah last Fall.

Prior to moving, Adney prepped at Spanish Fork High School. He showed enough on tape as a freshman to earn scholarship offers from both BYU and Utah.

When Adney committed to BYU, Illaisa Tuiaki was the defensive coordinator. One year later, the Cougars have a new defensive staff led by Jay Hill. Reid has been in communication with the new staff, particularly Coach Poppinga and Coach Po'uha. "I communicate mostly with coach Kelly Poppinga and Coach Po’uha," Reid said. "Coach Ena and Hill have also been in contact."

BYU's defensive staff plans to move Reid around until they find his natural position. At 6'5, Reid could end up at a few different positions. "I’ve loved communicating with all of them and am excited to play both off the ball, and rush off the edge. The coaches have been really open with me and let me know that they want to move me around a bit, but wherever I end up, I’m just excited to compete!"

Reid is planning to make the trip to Provo for an official visit soon. "I am planning to come up sometime around June to take an official," he said. "We are still working out the logistics and details with school and everything."

Reid's recruitment will certainly be one the most unique in the 2024 class. His recruiting profile was growing quickly before his move to Australia and subsequent commitment to BYU. Reid's recruitment is unorthodox, but he has the potential to be one of the best players in BYU's 2024 class.
