Coveted DB Nikko Klemm Talks BYU Unofficial Visit

On Friday, the BYU football program hosted a Spring scrimmage and alumni game. As part of the festivities, BYU also hosted its annual Junior Day, a recruiting event where various recruits are invited to unofficially visit campus. One of the highly-touted recruits in attendance was California defensive back prospect Nikko Klemm. We caught up with Klemm to get an update on his unofficial visit.
Klemm preps at Juniper Serra High School in Gardena, California. Klemm, a 5'11 cornerback, received a BYU offer back in January. He holds competing offers from Oregon, Arizona State, West Virginia, and Colorado State among others.
During his first trip to BYU, Klemm was able to take in the alumni day activities and check out the campus. "We were able to go see the spring scrimmage and alumni game," Klemm said. "I also got to check out the facilities and BYU’s campus. I got to meet the staff and players. I also got to meet Zach Wilson too." On what was his favorite part about the visit, Klemm said, "My favorite part was talking with the coaches. It seems like a real close family environment. Also watching the Spring scrimmage and seeing what corners they have already and how they play."
Klemm received an offer from BYU and cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford. Prior to being recruited by BYU, he wasn't very familiar with the program but he knew a few things about BYU. "I mostly just knew about their stadium being one of the coolest stadiums, and also that they have a strong fan base that travels really well."
Since receiving an offer from BYU, Klemm has established a strong relationship with Jernaro Gilford. "Coach Gilford is one of my favorite coaches," Nikko said on his relationship with the BYU cornerbacks coach. "He’s a great coach, but you can tell he’s a great person too. He’s straightforward too which I like."
Nikko's relationships with Coach Gilford and the rest of the defensive staff will be critical if BYU wants to land an eventual commitment. Having strong relationships with the coaching staff is one of the most important factors in his recruitment. "The most important thing to me is my relationships with the staff and if I can see myself playing in their system," Klemm said on the most important factors in his recruitment. "And being happy at that school in and outside of football."
Klemm's recruitment really started to heat up over the last six or seven months. He received his first offer from Campbell University last year - now he has various schools to choose from. Klemm has emerged as one of BYU's priority targets in the 2024 recruiting class. BYU coordinator Jay Hill has not been shy about his desire to run an aggressive defense at BYU. For an aggressive defense to be successful in the Big 12, BYU will need high-quality defensive backs that can play man coverage. Klemm fits that description.
Klemm tells Cougs Daily that he doesn't have a firm decision date. "I'm just letting it play out right now," Klemm said. "Anything can happen though."
Getting Klemm on campus is a positive development for BYU. The Cougars will have to continue to make him a top priority to stay in the race.
