Longtime Commit Easton Baker Backs off BYU Commitment

Baker was committed to BYU for over two years before opening up his recruitment

Nearly two and a half years ago, Stansbury High School standout Easton Baker committed to BYU after his ninth grade football season. On Monday, Baker backed off his BYU commitment and opened his recruitment. Since committing to BYU, Baker has received a competing offer from Washington State and he has heard from the likes of Miami, Nebraska, USC, Oregon, Utah, and Utah State. He was originally recruited as an athlete, but BYU's staff had him slated to play defense.

"After many conversations with my family, I have decided to open up my recruiting process and decommit from BYU," Baker said in an announcement on Twitter. "BYU will still be one of my top schools. My recruitment is 100 % open."

When Baker committed to BYU, Ilaisa Tuiaki was BYU's defensive coordinator. After last season, BYU and Tuiaki parted ways and BYU hired Jay Hill from Weber State as the new defensive coordinator.

Baker is one of the most physical and punishing players in the state. Losing him is a blow to the 2024 class, but BYU has eight months to backfill Baker and find another Power Five-ready player. 

Now that Baker is no longer part of the 2024 class, BYU has four commitments in the class of 2024:

1. Siosefa Brown - DL/LB
2. Dallin Johnson - DL
3. Chance Harrison - ATH
4. Adney Reid - DL
