Priority BYU QB Target Noah Lugo Opens up His Recruitment

BYU's top quarterback target is back on the market. Three-star quarterback and Texas native Noah Lugo backed off his UTSA commitment on Saturday. Lugo was committed to the Roadrunners when he received a BYU offer last month and decided to take an unofficial visit to Provo.
BYU has made Lugo a top priority since extending a scholarship offer. Lugo committed to UTSA back in June over competing offers from Indiana, Tulane, Bowling Green, and a host of smaller schools. In an earlier interview, Lugo told Cougs Daily that he wanted to explore the possibility of playing for BYU. "When [Aaron Roderick] offered me, he was completely adamant that he didn't want to step on anybody's toes and he really just wanted to know is [BYU] an option, is this a thing." Lugo said. "I was completely open about it. I'm gonna see every option in my recruitment process. So, since it's my process and you only get one of these, I wanna make sure I'm making the right decision. So when it came to the offer, I was like, let's get this thing rolling."
Now that Lugo is free to explore his options, BYU is in a good position in his recruitment. Lugo has a good relationship with Aaron Roderick. On his unofficial visit, Lugo spent hours watching film with Coach Roderick and discussing his potential fit within the offense.
Lugo preps at Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. As a junior last season, Lugo racked up 30 total touchdowns and nearly 2,700 yards of total offense. Listed at 6'2, Lugo is a true dual-threat quarterback. He has a strong arm that can make throws at all levels of the field, and he has the running ability to punish defenses for long runs. Lugo tells Cougs Daily that BYU likes his ability to stress the defense with both his arm and legs.
BYU has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks under Aaron Roderick, meaning Lugo wouldn't have to rewrite the script of successful quarterback play in Roderick's offense. Instead, he could follow the path that's been laid out before him. Most recently, dual-threat quarterback Jaren Hall totaled nearly 7,000 yards of total offense and 61 total touchdowns including 800 yards on the ground. Hall was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2023 NFL Draft.
