Priority BYU Recruit Ikinasio Tupou Sets Commitment Date

One of BYU's top recruiting targets is set to announce his college decision in a few weeks. California offensive lineman Ikinasio Tupou announced that he will commit to his school of choice on December 9th. Tupou is down to five schools and BYU is among the finalists alongside Utah, Cal, Washington, and Arizona. Tupou also received competing offers from the likes of Tennessee, Arizona State, Oregon State, and Washington State among others during his recruitment.
Tupou, a Palo Alto, California native, took an official visit to BYU over the Summer. He has also taken official visits to Washington, Utah, and Arizona. Tupou is listed at 6'6 and 290 pounds. He is projected to play offensive tackle at the next level.
BYU's offensive staff has made Tupou a top priority throughout the recruiting cycle and the top priority among offensive line prospects. Offensive line is a major position of need in BYU's 2024 class. Of the 14 players currently committed to BYU in the 2024 class, none of them are projected to play along the offensive line.
Tupou is one of the most important players left on BYU's recruiting board. If BYU lands Tupou, he could factor into the rotation early in his career. BYU is projected to lose as many as three or four starters along the offensive line after the 2023 season. Even if Tupou commits to BYU, the Cougars will likely need to tap into the transfer portal to bring in more bodies.
The Cougars have already started offering offensive lineman from the transfer portal and JUCO ranks.
BYU is expecting former signees from the 2022 class to return in time for the 2024 season, but none of those signees are offensive lineman. The future of the offensive line will be an important storyline to follow over the next few months.
