Texas QB Noah Lugo is Set to Take BYU Visit

Recruiting quarterbacks will always be a critical ingredient to BYU's long-term success. Quarterback recruiting, especially over the last few months, has been a top storyline in BYU circles. The Cougars have prioritized two high school quarterbacks: California native Maealiuaki Smith and Texas native Noah Lugo. Lugo, who is currently committed to UTSA, received an offer from BYU earlier this month. He tells Cougs Daily that he will travel to Provo to visit BYU on July 29th. We caught up with Lugo to preview his upcoming visit.
Lugo has been in touch with BYU's staff for a few months. He first communicated with offensive analyst Matt Mitchell. Mitchell traveled to Texas to watch Lugo throw in person. "Coach Mitchell came and watched me throw," Lugo said. "He videoed me, showed it to Coach A-Rod and then from there, we started building a relationship...we started chatting a little bit more, started to get to know each other."
Lugo committed to UTSA last month over competing offers from Indiana, Tulane, Bowling Green, and a host of smaller schools. "When [Aaron Roderick] offered me, he was completely adamant that he didn't want to step on anybody's toes and he really just wanted to know is [BYU] an option, is this a thing." Lugo continued. "I was completely open about it. I'm gonna see every option in my recruitment process. So, since it's my process and you only get one of these, I wanna make sure I'm making the right decision. So when it came to the offer, I was like, let's get this thing rolling."
Prior to getting in touch with BYU's staff, Lugo knew a few things about the BYU football program through his friend and former BYU target Luke Moga. "One of my really good buddies, he's actually committed Oregon in this class. His name's Luke Moga. He's one of my my best friends. He told me a lot about BYU. He told me that he loved the coaches, he loved the environment. The head coach by far was one of his favorite head coaches. He said that before he committed to Oregon...so that's pretty much all I knew about [BYU] besides their quarterback pedigree and how good they've been at getting their quarterbacks drafted."
On what he is looking to accomplish on his BYU visit, Lugo said, "I'm big into academics so they have my exact degree that I've been looking for. It is civil engineering and construction management, which is the exact job that I've been looking for. So I would just like to learn a lot about that. Learn a little bit about the offense, obviously, and then get to know coach A-Rod and Coach Mitchell pretty well in person and then obviously see Provo."
Lugo preps at Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. As a junior last season, Lugo racked up 30 total touchdowns and nearly 2,700 yards of total offense. Listed at 6'2, Lugo is a true dual-threat quarterback. He has a strong arm that can make throws at all levels of the field, and he has the running ability to punish defenses for long runs. Lugo tells Cougs Daily that BYU likes his ability to stress the defense with both his arm and legs.
BYU has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks under Aaron Roderick, meaning Lugo wouldn't have to rewrite the script of successful quarterback play in Roderick's offense. Instead, he could follow the path that's been laid out before him. Most recently, dual-threat quarterback Jaren Hall totaled nearly 7,000 yards of total offense and 61 total touchdowns including 800 yards on the ground. Hall was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The BYU offer is especially meaningful to Lugo since it is his first Big 12 offer. "It means a lot [to get a Big 12 offer]," Lugo said. "Because Texas schools have recruited me and I really came to liking of them. But then obviously they went separate ways...I was just really stoked because [BYU] is a school with a type of pedigree that is better than most Texas schools that were recruiting me at the time...it really just makes a difference when you know that people have gone through the system and became successful at the next level."
BYU would do very well to add Lugo to the 2024 recruiting class. The Cougars have a chance to make their pitch on campus for the first time this week.
