Last month, BYU extended a scholarship offer to Texas running back prospect Viron Ellison. Ellison named his top five schools on Monday and BYU made the cut alongside Missouri, Cal, Tulsa, and Arkansas State. We caught up with Ellison to discuss his recruitment and visit plans.

Prior to getting in touch with BYU and BYU running backs coach Harvey Unga, Ellison new very little about BYU. Since then, Coach Unga has been out to Viron's Spring game and taught him more about the BYU football program.

"Coach Unga is a good guy," Ellison said. "He came to my Spring game and he liked my style of play. He said I remind him of a few people he has sent to the NFL...he told me that he sent a couple of running backs to the NFL and he would love to work with me."

Ellison plans to get out to Provo to see BYU for himself. "I heard BYU is a pretty place, I will be going out to visit soon for an official visit." Ellison will take some visits before making his college decision on August 27th, the day of the first game of his senior season.

BYU offered Ellison as a running back. He tells Cougs Daily that a few schools have offered him to play defense. He enjoys playing running back most, but he's interested in finding a staff that will develop him and have his best interest in mind regardless of position. "[I'm] just trying to find a coach and school that trusts me and wants to develop me as a man and not just use me for my talent. It's more than just football." The relationships he develops with the coaching staff will be one of the most important factors in his recruitment. He is also looking for a school with good academics for life after football. "I was told a BYU degree holds a lot of weight and you can do a lot with it," Ellison said.

Ellison preps at Lewisville High School in Lewisville, Texas. He is listed at 6'2 and he also plays on defense as an edge/outside linebacker. As a junior, he ran for nearly 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had a sack and multiple quarterback pressures. He was named to the All-District offensive player of the year after the 2022 season.
