CAL-PEPPERDINE HISTORY: The Bears are 2-0 all-time vs. Pepperdine, winning 79-63 on Nov. 13, 2012, and 62-58 on Dec. 23, 2004. Both games were in Berkeley.
CAL STORYLINES: The Bears are starting over under new coach Mark Fox after going 8-23 and 8-24 in two seasons with former coach Wyking Jones. Those represented the worst back-to-back seasons in program history. . . . In the 98-75 exhibition win against St. Martin’s last week Fox started returnees Paris Austin, Matt Bradley and Grant Anticevich, and newcomers Kareem South and Lars Thiemann. South, a graduate transfer guard from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, led the Bears with 23 points. . . . This is the first of four games Cal will play against teams from the West Coast Conference. The Bears also face USF, Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s. Cal was 1-3 against WCC opponents the past two seasons, losing twice to Saint Mary’s.
PEPPERDINE STORYLINES: The Waves were picked to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference, behind Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and BYU. . . . Lorenzo Romar is in his second season of his second stint as Pepperdine’s coach. Romar has a career record of 407-302, with 298 wins coming during his 15 seasons at Washington. . . . The Waves, who were 2-11 away from home last season, are led by first-team all-WCC junior guard Colbey Ross (19.4 points, 7.0 assists), and brothers Kameron Edwards (14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds) and Kassler Edwards (10.0 points, 5.6 rebounds). . . . The Waves are 16-52 all-time vs. the Pac-12, including 1-18 vs. UCLA and Arizona.
