Legendary NFL Wideout Makes Bold Claim On Former Star Cincinnati Wideout

Last season, the Cincinnati Bearcats finished with the nation’s 74th-best passing offense in the nation, which was led by former quarterback Brendan Sorsby. However, it doesn’t take much research to find out that wideout Cyrus Allen played a crucial role in Sorsby’s and Cincinnati’s success.

Allen didn’t have the prototypical career of today’s NFL draft pick. Coming out of Landry-Walker High School, Allen was a 3-star prospect from the class of 2020 who was ranked as the consensus 937th-best high school prospect with zero power-conference offers.

Allen took his talents to Louisiana Tech, where for two years he rose up the ranks as one of the most effective wideouts outside power football for the Bulldogs. Allen totaled 1,278 yards to go along with 8 touchdowns and an average of 60.9 yards per game.

Following his standout start, Allen took a bet on himself and made the jump to Texas A&M ahead of the 2024 season. But Allen wasn’t able to get a strong enough foothold with the Aggies, going for 269 yards and just about 27 yards per game for one touchdown on the season.

This wasn’t good enough for Allen, as he then made one last transfer, this time to the Bearcats, where things finally clicked like never before.

Last season, Allen finished with 674 yards across 51 receptions and 13 touchdowns to follow suit. Allen never went more than two games without a receiving touchdown and ended the season with at least one touchdown in six of his last seven games.

On Steve Smith’s “89 with Steve Smith Sr.” the former five-time Pro Bowler evaluated Allen’s potential with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Cyrus Allen is going to be, eventually, in my humble opinion, their number one wide receiver. Here's why," Smith said. "Their quarterback has been wanting a guy like Cyrus Allen, who has the ability to run in the intermediate. Xavier Worthy's right here, Rasheed Rice is right here, and they got somebody in middle that they need, and that's Cyrus Allen.”

So far in Allen’s two preseason appearances with the Chiefs, he has totaled 27 yards on 5 receptions and 10 targets.

Last season, the Chiefs ended the year with the 17th-best passing offense at 214.1 yards per game through the air.

While Allen could have to chisel a role from the second-string this season, there are few better who can provide an outlook on what it takes to become a starter in the league than Smith.
