No. 20 Tigers fall to No. 6 Bulldogs in 20 innings

ATHENS—The No. 20 Clemson Tigers avenged their loss to the No. 6 Georgia BulThe No. 20 Clemson Tigers fell short in their attempt to avenge a loss to the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs two weeks ago, as they dropped the second game of a home-and-home series by a final score of 3-2 Tuesday night at Foley Field.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 20th, a walk and a wild throw on a pick off attempt moved the winning run to second base. Two batters later, Conner Tate ended the game with a walk-off single.

The loss was dropped the Tigers to 0-3 on the season in extra-inning games.

Starting pitchers Jacob Hennessy (Clemson) and Tim Elliott (Georgia) were locked in a pitchers duel, as the two pitchers allowed only three combined hits and no earned runs through the first five innings of the game.

The Tigers finally broke the scoreless game in the top of the sixth inning. After Sam Hall walked and advanced to second on a ground out by Grayson Byrd, Kyle Wilkie’s single plated the Tigers’ first run of the night. One batter later the Tigers added to their lead, as Bryar Hawkins stand-up triple with two outs plated Wilkie from first and gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they plated two runs on one hit and an error off of Tiger reliever Sam Weatherly.

20 inning record: The 20 inning game was the longest game in the history of the Clemson-Georgia series. The game was Clemson’s longest game in school history.

Clemson has relied on many freshmen and sophomores to contribute in 2019: The weekend rotation features two freshmen (Davis Sharpe, Keyshawn Askew) and a sophomore (Mat Clark). Two of the Tigers’ best relievers have been sophomore righthander Holt Jones and sophomore lefthander Sam Weatherly.
