Why Standout Transfer Cornerback Already Thinks He's 'Home' With Clemson Tigers

In this story:

There aren’t many players who have been raved about like Clemson cornerback Elliot Washington II, but in just a short time, he’s trusting himself again.

The Penn State transfer has stood out over the course of spring camp for the Tigers, cementing himself as a pivotal starter in the secondary in 2026. However, it’s not just from his performance on the field, but also from the internal belief he has.

Add in his previous experience under defensive coordinator Tom Allen, and it’s a perfect blend for why he’s turned heads this spring.

“I would just say it’s kind of just second nature to me, for real, then also just coming from Penn State and also coming here, the same philosophy is built on just people,” Washington said after the spring game. “Everyone’s coming together and actually believing us like we’re all brothers.”

After Allen left the Nittany Lions following the 2024-25 season to join Clemson, Washington didn’t have the year he wanted. His numbers dipped, and Penn State’s 7-6 season deflated the expectations of a national championship.

Because of this, a new start allowed Washington to get his mojo back, and it left marks on Clemson throughout this period.

Really, just being able to trust myself, for real again, more because I feel like when I did leave, it was kind of down a little bit,” he said, “but I feel like after the spring now, I feel like I got it back, for sure, 100%.”

The Venice, Florida, native burst onto the scene when practice began, recording two interceptions in the first practice to receive praise from the defensive ends. Washington said the success came from his past knowledge of Allen.

Now, he can play freely.

“I can just play fast now. I don’t have to think about what the play is,” he said. “I don’t have to think about what’s going on. I know the route. I know the concept, for real. So, it’s more just me dissecting what the plays are on offense and stuff like that.”

When asked about what he will be working on throughout the summer, it’s not anything regarding his technique or tangibles, but rather something simpler.

Washington just wants to stack days.

“I’ll just say it’s really just me trusting myself and, actually, I know the scheme. I know everything,” he said. “So I just feel like it’s just repetition, repetition, repetition, because that’s the best thing you can get out of just repetition.”

That’s a group mentality, which began with the nine defensive transfers getting together to build chemistry. Then, that influence went to the remaining roster, making everybody want to be better.

Everyone has the same mission: to win the one. That will be the focus this summer for Washington and the others.

“I feel like just all of us end up clicking, and then we started to be around the guys,” he said. “So, it just made everybody feel like, ‘Oh, we got the same mission. We all trying to accomplish the same thing, so we all need to put our heads down to work.’”
