In this story:

Outside of the head coaching moves, the biggest hire this offseason in college football was Clemson snatching offensive coordinator Garrett Riley away from TCU. Fresh off of guiding TCU's offense in the Horned Frogs' run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, Riley was named the top coordinator in college football, winning the Broyles Award for the nation's top assistant.

Now, heading up Clemson's offensive attack, expectations are sky-high for Riley and his unit. CBS Sports named the Clemson offense among its "Most Improved Units" heading into the 2023 season.

What's interesting about all the hype is that nothing has really changed outside of Riley taking over as coordinator. Sure, Cade Klubnik is now the full-time guy, replacing DJ Uiagalelei at quarterback, but we saw Klubnik for extended periods of time in both the ACC Championship game and Orange Bowl. He was nearly flawless in the ACC title game, but against Tennessee's 91st-ranked defense, he completed just 56% of his throws and was intercepted twice.

Garrett Riley's system is much more quarterback friendly, and a full offseason at QB1 should be good for Klubnik, but it remains to be seen. As for the rest of an offense that finished 48th in total offense, the Tigers return plenty of starters. Will Shipley and Phil Mafah probably represent the best backfield in the ACC, Beaux Collins and Antonio Williams should benefit from the new system, and the line returns four out of five starters.

Clemson should be better in 2023. All of the players mentioned above have a lot of plays under their belts and a fresh, new coordinator calling plays, but there are reasons to be pessimistic. The Tigers don't have a proven game-breaker on the outside. Shipley and Mafah are studs but they need the guys on the outside to make some plays to free them up.

In a world of supposed instant fixes out of the Transfer Portal, Dabo Swinney and his staff believe they have the talent they need already on their roster. We'll get to see this fall.
