Duke basketball and St. John's are "in very strong discussions to play" at Arthur Ashe Stadium during the 2024-25 season, Red Storm head coach Rick Pitino told College Hoops Today's Jon Rothstein on Friday afternoon.

There has never been a college basketball game in Arthur Ashe Stadium, a 23,771-seat tennis stadium — the world's largest tennis stadium — that hosts the US Open. However, the venue hosted a WNBA game between the New York Liberty and Indiana Fever in 2008.

"We're not definite," Pitino, a 71-year-old Hall of Famer entering his first season at St. John's, later told Forbes' Adam Zagoria about the potential matchup at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York, against what would be Jon Scheyer's third group of Blue Devils as head coach. "We're in negotiations with that...

"I know both teams are interested in doing it. I know we've been in negotiations, but I think the likelihood is more positive than negative."

The Duke basketball program boasts a 17-7 overall record against the St. John's Red Storm in a series that dates back to 1938.

It's worth noting the Blue Devils and Red Storm have played 17 times in the regular season since 1999, rotating between Durham and New York.

But their last meeting was over four years ago. That was a 91-61 win by Duke's Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, Tre Jones, and friends in Cameron Indoor Stadium in February 2019.
