Henry Coleman III announcement: What you need to know

Henry Coleman III will announce his college choice on Friday afternoon, Sept. 27.

Duke is thought to be the leader for the 6-foot-6, 210-pound power forward from the class of 2020, who is rated a four-star. Rivals has him as the No. 44 prospect in the class, four spots behind 247Sports’ ranking. Both services have him as the No. 7 power forward.

Coleman will make the announcement at his high school—Trinity Episcopal, in Richmond, Virginia.

He took an official visit to Duke at the end of August and an official to Virginia Tech two weeks later.

Michigan, N.C. State and Ohio State are the other schools in his top five.

Coleman’s highlight film isn’t as flashy as most top recruits. There are no flashy dunks, power drives to the hoop or eye-popping moves.

Instead, the highlights show a dirty-work guy who always seems to be in the right spot.

Coleman runs the floor well. In the second clip, he defends a wing three pointer, then is the first man down the court to make a layup at the other end.

He has extremely long arms, which, along with his basketball IQ, allows him to get into position to be an offensive rebounding force.

He also has a good array of post moves, scoring on hooks. He’s able to hit his hook on the move—the tape shows one at the end of a drive from the free throw line and another on a curl on an inbounds pass.

His length also serves him on the defensive end. He blocks several shots from behind, including one where he pins the ball against the backboard, then leads the break.

There’s no evidence of an outside shot, which he’ll need to develop at the college level.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski has praised this year’s Blue Devils team as an “old-fashioned” team with experience and youth, thanks to seniors Javin DeLaurier and Jack White.

Coleman seems likely to be a similar player—a four-year guy who can create points from missed shots, without needing plays called for him. His long arms will likely keep him out of the foul trouble that has plagued DeLaurier at times, while he doesn’t have White’s outside shot at this point.

Someone will be getting a productive glue guy in the post.
