Justin Robinson Named Duke's Fourth Captain

Forward joins Javin DeLaurier, Jack White, Tre Jones

One game in to the 2019-20 season, Duke added a fourth captain.

Duke men's basketball head coach announced Thursday that fifth-year senior has been named a captain for the 2019-20 season.

Robinson joins sophomore point guard Tre Jones and senior forwards Jack White and Javin DeLaurier as captains and members of Duke’s Leadership Council, which was just created for this season.

"I'm thrilled to add Justin as one of our team captains," Krzyzewski said in a release from the school. "He is our most experienced player, a natural leader and a fifth-year student-athlete that graduated from Duke and is now pursuing his master's degree. He is without a doubt the most respected guy in our locker room and will add another valued voice on our Leadership Council."

Robinson is a native of San Antonio, Texas and son of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer David Robinson.

Robinson arrived at Duke as a preferred walk-on and later earned a scholarship. He averaged 1.1 points and 0.5 rebounds in his first three seasons. He didn’t play in Duke’s season-opening win over Kansas.

White and DeLaurier also served as captains last season, becoming the first repeat captains since Grayson Allen, in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Jones is the first sophomore captain since Rodney Hood, who was a redshirt sophomore in 2013-14.

Robinson isn’t the first Duke captain to be added after the team captains were already announced. In 2011-12, Seth Curry was named captain more than a month after Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee after Krzyzewski said he “emerged as a leader”.
