The Duke football program is now 4-2 after losing to North Carolina at home. After an extremely disappointing loss for the Blue Devils, here are a few quick observations.

Passing Game Mirrors Week 1 Struggles

The Blue Devils' passing game found a bit of momentum in the second half, but it was largely inconsistent for most of the game. Quarterback Walker Eget missed a few big throws and got away with at least two or three passes that certainly could've been turnovers.

Duke's receivers did a solid job getting open, and they had opportunities to make big plays. However, those largely went unfulfilled throughout the contest. Even with star running back Nate Sheppard questionable all week and entering Saturday as a game-time decision, he was the most impactful player on the field for Duke, especially as a receiver.

This was a Tar Heels' secondary that was dealing with injuries heading into the outing and seemed like a game where Eget and the passing attack could air it out a bit more. Duke had those opportunities, but couldn't execute a lot of the time.

Duke had several opportunities to get in the end zone that it couldn't take advantage of.

Defense Takes Advantage With Key Turnovers

North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. had thrown two interceptions in each of the last two games and had been sacked 11 times heading into Saturday. The Blue Devils have a ton of talent on the defensive front and a much-improved secondary compared to 2025.

Duke came into this game as one of the best scoring defenses in the ACC, and Carolina as one of the worst scoring offenses in the league, meaning Duke's defense had a prime chance to take over this game. Especially in the second half, it did just that until the final couple of minutes.

The Blue Devils forced multiple takeaways against North Carolina after forcing two all season long before the rivalry bout against the Heels, though it left some on the bone in terms of pressure.

Overall, the Blue Devils' forced turnovers kept them in the game and in a position to win. It wasn't perfect, but it was a great sign for a defense with a ton of potential.

Penalties an Issue Late

Penalties might have been the biggest reason why Duke lost at Georgia Tech last weekend and felt like an issue that had to get cleaned up as soon as possible. The Blue Devils had a couple of costly penalties in the second half, but it was somewhat improved in the grand scheme of things.

Duke can't beat itself if it's going to consistently win games, and racking up penalties is a very easy way to do that.
