Why DC Jonathan Patke Critical to Duke's 2026 Success

In this story:
Duke football enters a precarious time as the reigning ACC champions, following an offseason that saw the loss of numerous key starters and superstars. The Blue Devils went from a program primed to take a step toward being the favorites in the ACC this fall to pondering whether they can win seven games.
Head coach Manny Diaz has done incredible things for the Duke Blue Devils since replacing Mike Elko two years ago. With back-to-back nine-win seasons and a conference championship, he seems to be squared away as Duke's guy, even if this season is expected to be his most challenging.
Duke's Strength Is on Defense in 2026

The offense continues to evolve into what it could become this fall under offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer, a key assistant on Diaz's staff. While the offense faces questions, the defense could be Duke's strength, something Diaz has taken pride in as a former defensive coordinator.
With the defense the leading unit for Duke entering 2026, defensive coordinator Jonathan Patke could quietly help the Blue Devils turn things around despite a rough 2025 season in which a wildly productive offense led by former quarterback Darian Mensah and freshman running back Nate Sheppard was the catalyst.

Duke's defense was ranked low in several defensive categories, including scoring (98th), passing yards per game (132nd), and rushing defense (66th). The unit has to be better this time around with no excuses, even if injuries play a role. Something tells me this unit won't have a hard time improving overall.
Jonathan Patke Becomes One of Duke's Most Important Assistant Coaches

With a top-shelf linebacker unit in the ACC, Duke has the manpower and personnel to take a jump in rushing yards allowed per game. This passing defense also has a chance to improve with sophomore safety Andrew Pellicciotta and star 2025 recruit edge rusher Bryce Davis expected to have major roles this fall. There are high expectations with the latter, who has a chance to become one of the biggest forces in the league.
Patke once spent his days with Diaz in Miami, and the two are now reunited in Durham to help the Blue Devils take another step as a program, matching the expectations placed on them after winning the conference championship last December. He has the linebacker corps, a few young standouts ready to emerge as high-end players on the roster, and a defensive backfield expected to step up.

For Duke, with the biggest strength of the roster coming on defense, Patke becomes maybe the most important assistant coach on the Blue Devils' coaching staff. If it works out, don't be surprised to see this team take another trip down I-85 for a chance to successfully defend their conference crown.
