Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) five-star VJ Edgecombe, set for an official visit in Durham next weekend, drew an in-person check-in from second-year Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer and assistant Jai Lucas on Wednesday. On Friday, recruiting insider Adam Zagoria reported that Edgecombe called off this weekend's trip to Michigan.

Are those news items related? Maybe loosely. Or maybe not at all.

Either way, Michigan head coach Juwan Howard and his crew appear to be out of the mix for Edgecombe, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard who ranks No. 6 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite. After all, Zagoria noted that the decision to cancel Edgecombe's official visit with the Wolverines was "mutual."

In early August, he revealed a top 10 in his recruitment. That list consists of G League Ignite, a perceived legit player in the race, plus nine colleges in Duke, Michigan, Alabama, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Miami, St. John's, and UConn.

Thus far in his senior year, VJ Edgecombe has taken official visits to Florida and Baylor.

Following his official Duke basketball visit, which includes his attending Friday night's Countdown to Craziness alongside two fellow 2024 Blue Devil targets in five-star small forward Cooper Flagg and five-star center Patrick Ngongba II, he'll check out Alabama and Florida State in early November.

Zagoria and other insiders have opined that Edgecombe may wait and see how his suitors' seasons play out before announcing his decision in the spring.
