Heralded Duke Basketball Recruiting Prospect Announces Transfer

In this story:
Darryn Peterson is a 6-foot-5, 195-pound shooting guard who ranks No. 3 overall on the 247Sports 2025 Composite, below only prime Duke basketball recruiting targets Cameron Boozer and Cooper Flagg.

And although Peterson doesn't boast an offer from second-year Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer, he has been on the Blue Devils' recruiting radar for over a year.
They called him in mid-June on the first day that coaches from college programs were permitted to contact rising high school juniors directly.
Furthermore, Scheyer's cohorts have attended at least a handful of his on-court performances this year. That includes Peterson's 46-point outing at an Adidas 3SSB event in April and his lights-out showings for the USA U16 National Team at the FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico in early June.
If Scheyer and his crew plan to check in on the 16-year-old sensation's development next season, they must do so at national powerhouse Huntington Prep (W.Va.). On Wednesday, Peterson announced his transfer from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (Ohio).

Sure, the Duke basketball recruiters haven't established a consistent pipeline from Huntington Prep to Durham like with Paul VI Catholic (Va.) and Montverde Academy (Fla.).
But consider that one recent Blue Devil, Jaemyn Brakefield, was enrolled there in 2020 when he announced his commitment to now-retired legend Mike Krzyzewski and then-associate head coach Jon Scheyer.
As for Darryn Peterson's recruitment, he's racked up dozens of offers, including from a couple of bluebloods in UNC and Kentucky. Meanwhile, he has neither named finalists nor scheduled official visits, and no 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions exist in the battle.
2025 SG 6-foot-5 Darryn Peterson is one of the more intriguing prospects in the country regardless of class.

An electrifying prospect, has great instincts on the floor, feel for the game, scores in a variety of ways, very athletic with length, and plays with great energy. pic.twitter.com/5PVcPT9blo
In other words, there should still be time for Duke to enter the fray if Scheyer decides to go that route. It remains a possibility; after all, just because the Blue Devils have extended offers to half of the top 10 prospects on the 247Sports 2025 Composite doesn't mean they will land them.
