Florida Gators guard Trey Bonham will enter the transfer portal after just one season in orange and blue, a source shared with All Gators on Thursday.

Bonham, who joined Todd Golden and Co. in their first campaign as a transfer prospect last offseason season, posted 5.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in one season in Gainesville.

Upon his arrival, the VMI transfer was expected to bring a needed spark to the offensive end of the floor after producing as the most efficient guard in college basketball per advanced metrics in 2021-22. He accounted for 13.6 points on 47.8% from the field and 34.8% from three. Florida's search — consisting of the analytical approach Golden, assistant Kevin Hovde and the support staff looked to bring to Gainesville — landed on Bonham as a high-ceiling project piece.

Initially, he embodied the type of players Golden looked to equip the Florida roster with as he admitted to All Gators following his commitment to UF that he would've pledged before his visit.

He had high hopes for his time in Gainesville and the message Golden was selling for the future.

"Coach Todd's swagger he's bringing, being a young coach, kind of changing the game a little bit," Bonham said in April 2022. "I think it's gonna be exciting down in Gainesville. I'm excited to see what he does and who else he brings in. I think he's just going to bring a different swagger down there."

Bonham was a part of that initial effort. Simultaneously, the Mobile, Ala., native fulfilled a dream of playing in the SEC.

Presenting score-first abilities from the point guard spot, he projected to serve as a perfect complement to the facilitation and floor-general efforts of Kyle Lofton as an option to backup the fifth-year senior at the one or operate in tandem at the two. Early in the year, that seemed to be the case as Bonham thrived.

He sparked the Gators with a start in the second half against FSU en route to a 17-point comeback victory over the Seminoles. That earned Bonham increased playing time and starting duties for the next 14 contests.

Averaging 13.8 points on 42.2% shooting — 39.3% from three — 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game during that stretch, the former Keydet boosted an offense that struggled to maintain a consistent presence throughout the year.

He even tied the record for most three-point field goals made without a miss in a single game with seven triples against FAMU in December.

However, despite his strong offensive prowess over that stretch, the sub-six-foot guard was limited defensively. He failed to possess the coveted length on the end of the floor that stood as the evident focus in Golden's first season. As a result, his time quickly dwindled as Florida progressed into the SEC slate, becoming nonexistent as the year closed on March 15.

As a result, he'll head elsewhere for his senior season.

Bonham is the eighth Gator to depart this offseason, joining three teammates from the 2022-23 season in the transfer portal in Kowacie Reeves Jr., Niels LaneJason Jitoboh and CJ Felder.

Graduate seniors Lofton, Myreon Jones and Colin Castleton are also leaving the program after exhausting their final season of eligibility.

Now, Bonham will hit the open market for a second time in as many offseasons, looking to regain his footing after a failed experiment in Gainesville. Given his high upside as a scorer, and highly efficient nature as a shooter, he should have several Power Six suitors contact him in the coming weeks.
