Florida State's projected 2023 scholarship count: Breaking Down The Numbers Prior to Spring Practice

In this story:
Spring football is less than a month away for Florida State. With practice No. 1 beginning on March 6, there's as much anticipation as there's been surrounding the program in years, both externally and internally. The Seminoles are bringing back a ton of key players and they're adding a crop of experienced transfers to that group to fill out the weak spots on the roster.

Over the last couple of months, FSU has landed top talent out of the NCAA Transfer Portal including former South Carolina tight end Jaheim Bell, former Virginia cornerback Fentrell 'Deuce' Cypress II, and former Western Michigan defensive tackle Braden Fiske, among others. The Seminoles also secured a signature from three-star linebacker Dylan Brown-Turner during February's traditional National Signing Day.
The scholarship count is quickly stacking up with Florida State's 2023 class bringing in 27 new additions to the program - 17 high school signees, nine transfers, and one junior college prospect.
Let's take a look at where things stand ahead of what should be a competitive slate of spring practices.

As of the middle of February, Florida State sits decently above the limit with 88 projected scholarships that have been allocated for the 2023 season. The addition of Brown-Turner two weeks ago and transfers in January like Cypress and former South Carolina defensive end Gilber Edmond have the Seminoles in need of some attrition - at least four players.
It's important to note, as always, that there's uncertainty surrounding whether redshirt junior tight end Preston Daniel, redshirt sophomore running back CJ Campbell, or redshirt freshman tight end Dante Anderson are on scholarship. The program hasn't provided official clarification one way or the other. For now, we will leave them out of the count.
Redshirt junior running back Caziah Holmes wasn't believed to be on scholarship during the fall. NoleGameday is projecting that he is elevated to a member of the 85-man limit which seems more than plausible after former star Treshaun Ward transferred to Kansas State.
Clearly, the spring will be an important period for members of Florida State's roster who are on the fringe of the rotation. Their respective performances over the coming weeks and months could be paramount to how the Seminoles' final 85-man scholarship count ends up shaking out.
It wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to see the coaching staff continue to gauge the transfer portal following spring practice. The Seminoles could still use some depth at safety depending on what players become available and how the numbers look. The spring window is expected to be open from May 1-15.
