The Florida State Seminoles were back on the practice fields Tuesday afternoon for their seventh spring practice after wrapping up scrimmage No. 1 last Saturday. Head coach Mike Norvell met with the media afterward to discuss the team and what he saw from them post-practice.

Norvell said it was a competitive day and emphasized that the energy from the team was prevalent. The practice got chippy at times and Norvell wants to make sure that the Seminoles stay under control.

"I thought it was another good competitive day. Coming off the scrimmage, I tried to push some install; put a good amount in on both sides of the ball. Trying to test the minds with the improvements that need to be made coming off of Saturday while still adding new concepts or things that we're looking at," Norvell said. "Both sides of the ball; I thought today was a mental test for them. I thought the guys came out; I thought they worked with good energy. We had some spirited moments in practice, just making sure we're controlling our emotions in the best way in the heat of the moment. But our guys, they're competing hard."

At the halfway mark through spring camp, Norvell said that he likes the competition that he sees and the way the spring is turning out.

"There's been good swings throughout practices of both sides of the ball having success, and there's times, it's, there is just good plays that are being made. I like the playmakers that are showing up. We've got a lot of competition. I like the way our spring is unfolding out here; seven practices in basically at the halfway point."

When asked about the intensity of the team returning to practice after their first scrimmage, he said he didn't get a sense of anyone holding back.

"I thought guys came and approached the work," Norvell said. "We had good meetings yesterday, and I challenged them today, you know, 'where are you going from here?' We've got fifteen days to get better. Every time we step out onto this field, it's got to be better than the last time, and I think I have not felt guys pulling back. It's competitive. It's physical; guys are pushing. I like the work that we got today and the energy in which the guys brought."

Norvell mentioned he set out specifically to put guys into some uncomfortable situations and bring adversity into the practice. When things got a little too spirited, the lesson to be taught was to control their emotions and the things around them.

"The number one thing I want for these guys is for them to always be in control of them. You think about this world and just all the things, yes there's football is one thing with the momentum swings and all of that, right? But there is so much beyond just the football field where that is critical to success. If you don't bring the intensity to get to that point, you don't know what's going to show up when you feel it in real life and in those situations. We try to create it, and it was good to see, but it's about that control and respect that we have for each other."

Norvell goes over the feistiness of the team, freshman growth, the family atmosphere of the team and more in his full interview below.

Tight end Jaheim Bell, defensive end Patrick Payton, running back Rodney Hill and defensive back Fentrell Cypress II also gave interviews after practice.
