True freshman running back Samuel Singleton and true freshman wide receiver Goldie Lawrence are joining two of the most experienced position groups on the roster. Both players are trying to adjust to the college schedule and lifestyle ahead of their first season in Tallahassee.
The new Seminoles haven't missed a beat as they are already going through workouts with the team.
"The workouts have been pretty good," Singleton said during his newcomer press conference on Wednesday. "The team was hyping it up and making it seem like I'd be dying every day. I like it and it's pushing me to be better. With the mindset I have, even if it hurts I just go through it because I know I'm getting better. I like them a lot."
"It's no joke," Lawrance added. "It's good, I'm getting better. It's hard work, we're getting there."
"So much running like you don't even stop. So much movement and it's fast," Lawrence continued on the workouts. "Weight room, really, you've got to have technique in there. If you don't have the technique, you're going to keep doing it until you have the right technique."
Lawrence enters a room that includes talents such as Johnny Wilson, Kentron Poitier, Keon Coleman. He's hoping to take away something from each of them and says Coleman is already taking him under his wing.
"Everything, man. Just their work ethic," Lawrence said. "Keon, details, stay on it, man. He's really taking me under his wing, for real."
Florida State uses multiple running backs in its offense and had four players rush 80+ times last season. Singleton is more than familiar with head coach Mike Norvell's history of productive backfields.
"For me, I believe in coach Norvell's system and how he wants to run the offense and use the running backs altogether," Singleton said. "When I came in they showed me how they would use my speed. I looked into it and I really liked it especially with his history when he was over at Memphis."
Both players went into detail about why they chose the Seminoles over other programs. In the end, it was visiting Tallahassee that sold them on playing in garnet and gold.
"My recruiting process, it was pretty smooth. I was getting to know coaches and other schools I was interested in and that were interested in me," Singleton said. "I enjoyed it a lot, I had a lot of visits I went on and got to meet new people. When I came on the official visit that's when I really realized that this is a really nice school that I might want to go to. That really made me want to go here even more. Now that I'm here, I'm really enjoying it."
"It's like family up here. They treat you like family," Lawrence added. "All the players, the brotherhood, it's real up here. Getting up here, I was coming up like every week just chilling with everybody. If you came up here on a visit, you'd feel it for real."
Lawrence will lean on the details that he learned during a successful prep career at Seminole High School. His speed is an asset that he can utilize early.
"Speed, very physical, good at getting in and out of my cuts," Lawrence said. "Stuff like that. Really just always worry about the details. Details is the key, for real."
Singleton is finally healthy after dealing with a troublesome hamstring injury that he suffered while running track. He posted a 10.86 100-meter dash as a sophomore. Florida State plans to use his speed in the slot and out of the backfield.
"I got hurt sometime during the beginning of track and I was really like not as tempted to come in full speed because I was kind of scared coming in and keeping up with the boys. I was really nervous, being that I didn't know if I fully recovered but now they got me right so I'm fully confident in everything that I can do now."
Though they both will probably redshirt in 2023, Singleton and Lawrence are planning to put in the work each day. The sky is the limit with the mindset each player possesses.
"I'm just going to stick it out and do my best in practice and show that I'm working hard," Singleton said. "I know that if I do my best I'm going to get in so I'm just going to do that and hope for the best."
"I'm looking most forward to probably the first time getting on that field," Lawrence added.
