Former FSU Football Defensive Tackle Making Another Comeback Attempt With Atlanta Falcons

The former Seminole is coming out of retirement for the third time.

As the saying goes, 'the third time is the charm.'

Former Florida State defensive tackle and NFL veteran Eddie Goldman is hoping his third comeback attempt will be the one that helps him make a resurgence at the professional level. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022 but ended up hanging up his cleats before the season.

Goldman came out of retirement last offseason and was promoted to the active roster but didn't end up making it through training camp. Now, he's ready to run it back with the Falcons for one final try.

On Tuesday evening, Goldman signed a new deal with Atlanta after being released from the reserve/left squad list, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. This continues a strange arc for Goldman as he enters his third season with the franchise but hasn't suited up for game action since 2021 when he was with the Chicago Bears.

Goldman rejoins a defensive tackle room that includes Grady Jarrett, David Onyemata, Ta'Quon Graham, Tommy Togiai, and Willington Prevlion. His experience could be useful along the interior if he's able to stick with the Falcons.

The Washington, D.C. native spent the first seven years of his professional career with the Chicago Bears after being selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He appeared in 81 games, with 73 starts, recording 175 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, one pass deflection, one safety, and two forced fumbles during his time with the Bears. Goldman elected to sit out the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Goldman was a standout in Tallahassee for three years. He earned snaps amongst a deep defensive line before entering the starting lineup in 2013. Goldman started 13 of 14 games as a sophomore, totaling 19 tackles and two sacks as the Seminoles defeated Auburn to win the final BCS national championship.

Goldman was even better during his final season at Florida State, developing into an All-American. He became a force in the middle of the defense, totaling 35 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and a team-high four sacks. Goldman recorded a career-high seven tackles in a close win over North Carolina State on the road where FSU avoided an upset.

The Atlanta Falcons will have ample time to get a look at Goldman this offseason during voluntary minicamp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp.
