Sam Cassell played two seasons of basketball during his career at Florida State. During his two years as a Seminole, Cassell averaged 18.3 points per game while starting each of his 66 games played.

With an incredible collegiate career, Cassell was selected 24th overall in the NBA Draft. He went on to play 15 seasons in the NBA, having appeared on eight different teams. With Cassell’s playing career having ended in 2008, he immediately began his professional coaching career, which started with the Washington Wizards. As an assistant coach, he went on to work with the Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and, now, the Boston Celtics.

On Sunday, news broke that Cassell would be joining the franchise as a member of the coaching staff. The Celtics were searching for an assistant coach with plenty of NBA experience, and Cassell brings just that.

While in Tallahassee, Cassell helped lead FSU to an Elite Eight appearance, and his time with the team eventually led to his jersey getting retired by the school.

With three NBA championships under his belt, Cassell may provide exactly what the Celtics need to get over the hump and hoist the franchise’s 18th championship. His first two NBA championships were in his first two seasons, both with the Houston Rockets. His final championship? In his final season when the Celtics won their most recent title in 2008.

Again, the former Seminole may have been the perfect assistant coaching hire for the Celtics, all things considered. Not only does Cassell have the accolades and a long playing career, but he has appeared in 136 playoff games across the span of his career.

After an incredible playing career, which happened to include two notable seasons at Florida State, Cassell is in a key opportunity to make a great impact on a championship team, which could end in his first championship in a coaching role.
