The majority of football players grow up with the dream to one day make the NFL. Unfortunately, the realities of professional sports can end up being quite brutal, especially at this tough time of the season when teams are forced to cut down their rosters from 90 to 53 players.

A large number of rookies around the league are getting a sour taste of business. Some will end up landing on practice squads while others may never get another chance to lace up their cleats again.

On Monday, the Miami Dolphins announced that they were cutting undrafted rookie quarterback James Blackman. This is the second time this month that the Dolphins have cut the former Florida State and Arkansas State signal-caller. He was also released prior to the team's first preseason game before being brought back after an injury to Mike White.

Blackman made his lone appearance during Miami's preseason finale as the Dolphins fell 31-18 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He completed 2/2 passes for 22 yards in reserve duty. Head coach Mike McDaniel announced that White cleared concussion protocol on Sunday, paving the way for Blackman's release from the roster.

The Florida native signed with Florida State as a three-star prospect with plenty of potential in the 2017 class. Unfortunately, he was thrown right into the fire after Deondre Francois was injured in the season-opener against Alabama and ended up being relied on to play a big role before he was truly ready.

Blackman spent four years at Florida State, suiting up for three different head coaches during his time in garnet and gold; Jimbo Fisher (2017), Willie Taggart (2018-19), and Mike Norvell. The constant changes among the coaching staff and one of the worst offensive lines in the country didn't do Blackman any favors while he was with the Seminoles.

His best season at Florida State came in 2017 when Blackman was a true freshman. He completed 173/297 passes for 2,230 yards with 19 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Blackman was named the 2017 Independence Bowl MVP after completing 18/26 passes for 233 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 42-13 victory against Southern Miss.

After losing the starting job during the 2020 season to Jordan Travis, Blackman chose to spend his final two seasons at Arkansas State. He played in 16 games for the Red Wolves while dealing with injuries.

Blackman is tied for tenth in FSU history with 43 touchdown passes. He ranks 11 on the program's all-time completions list (433) and 12th in program history in passing yards (5,445 passing yards) and total offense (5,417 yards).
