Philadelphia Eagles To Keep Former FSU Football Star For 2024 Season After Contract Restructure

The former Seminole is sticking around for at least one more year with the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles are retooling their roster this offseason following the retirement of franchise stars; center Jason Kelce and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. There were rumors over the past couple of weeks that the team would be moving on from former Pro Bowler and veteran defensive end, Joshua Sweat.

Nearly a week into free agency, the Eagles have finally come to a decision on his future. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Sweat will be sticking around in Philadelphia for at least one more year after restructuring his contract. The move guarantees him $10 million with a chance to max out at $13 million when you include incentives.

This is big news for the Eagles with the team coming off a disappointing finish to the 2023-24 campaign. Philadelphia got off to a 10-1 start prior to losing six of its final seven games of the season, including an upset defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs.

Sweat has spent the entirety of his six-year career in Philadelphia since being selected by the franchise in the fourth round of the 2018 draft. He's grown into a starter for the Eagles over the last three seasons and is coming off a season where he totaled 43 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a pass deflection in 17 starts.

The Virginia native has been at his best since signing a three-year/$40 million extension with the team in 2021. He was named a Pro Bowler that same year before the most productive season of his career in 2022 with 48 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, one forced fumble, one pass deflection, and one interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Sweat was a top recruit in the 2015 class who nearly had his career wiped away after a devastating knee injury that required reconstructive surgery. That didn't end up deterring him as he returned from a dislocated knee and torn ACL to appear in 12 games during his first year at Florida State.

Sweat flashed in Tallahassee but it was obvious that he was still working his way back to full strength. He recorded 138 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, six pass deflections, and an interception in three years with the Seminoles. Sweat was named a Freshman All-American Honorable Mention by Campus Insider in 2015.
