Intriguing Defensive Back Includes FSU Football In Final Five Schools List

In this story:
July has been Florida State's most memorable month on the recruiting trail to this point of the year.
The Seminoles have gained seven commitments over the last couple of weeks, including blue-chip prospects such as four-star running back Micahi Danzy, four-star wide receiver Elijah Moore, four-star defensive end DD Holmes, four-star cornerback Ricky Knight III, and four-star offensive lineman Jonathan Daniels.

The good news might not be over just yet with Florida State hosting a recruiting event on July 29. Five-star cornerback and top target, Charles Lester II, will announce his decision a day earlier.
On Sunday afternoon, three-star athlete Gregory Smith III released his top-five schools. The Seminoles were among the programs to be included on the list alongside Ole Miss, USF, Northern Illinois, and Howard (FCS).
Smith recently picked up an offer from FSU on June 21 after visiting campus alongside his team for a 7-on-7 event. The camp was canceled due to inclement weather in the area but he was still able to meet with the coaching staff.
The Florida native is a true diamond in the rough as he only holds FBS offers from a handful of schools; FSU, Ole Miss, USF, Toledo, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, and Akron. He's a lengthy athlete that also plays basketball and runs track. Smith was a state qualifier in both the triple jump and long jump as a junior.
To this point in his recruitment, he has yet to officially visit a school. Smith is just beginning to transition to the defensive side of the ball while also playing quarterback for Sumner High School.
As a junior, he completed 84/138 passes (60.9%) for 1,423 yards with 14 touchdown passes to nine interceptions while rushing 121 times for 787 yards and 11 more scores.
The 6-foot-3.5 inch, 191-pound defensive back is regarded as the No. 105 ATH and the No. 105 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2024 class according to 247Sports.
Florida State already has three defensive backs committed in its 2024 class - four-star cornerback Ricky Knight III, three-star safety Rydarrius Morgan, and three-star safety CJ Heard. The Seminoles have a shot at Lester and five-star safety KJ Bolden as well.
