Florida State's defensive back board is deep with a variety of prospects that fit the long and rangy mold that the coaching staff is searching for. There aren't many who are a better piece to the puzzle than four-star defensive back Zavier Mincey.

Mincey returned to Tallahassee for an official visit over the weekend with his family. The trip marked his third to FSU this calendar year.

"It was very fun and interactive just spending time with the coaches, getting more acquainted with the area," Mincey said to NoleGameday's Dustin Lewis. "It was very good."

The Seminoles view Mincey as a cornerback and have made him a top priority. He knows that he'll have to put in the work if he commits to FSU.

"They view me as a top priority," Mincey said. "Just come in and play, hard work. Nothing is given but earned, so just come in and compete."

Defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. is a big fan of Mincey's game. He's a physical corner that is long but not at the detriment of his speed.

"Long but still twitchy, like quick. Being able to play with fast receivers," Mincey said. "Physical, because this day-and-age, they just isolating DBs and making them tackle."

Mincey paid a lot of attention to how the coaches and players interacted with one another during the visit. That's one aspect that he's always watching.

"How people interact with each other," Mincey said. "You can talk to a coach, they can interact with you a certain way but how they interact with each other when I'm not around. Stuff like that."

The Florida native wanted to hear from the players on this trip. He spent time with a trio of safeties - Shyheim Brown, Akeem Dent, and Jaden Floyd.

"Just talking to the players, what the players saying is what the coaches saying," Mincey said. "What you see is what you get so everybody's genuine."

All three players had a simple message about the program.

"Really just they're on the rise and like I said earlier, what you see is what you get," Mincey said. "Nobody's faking it, they're not putting on a show."

Prior to departing, Mincey sat down with head coach Mike Norvell for a meeting in his office. Norvell made it clear that he wants him in Tallahassee.

"Just that he wants me to come play here," Mincey said. "He sees me being successful. He wants to coach me, not just as a player, but also as a person."

Mincey previously visited Florida in June and is scheduled to be at Miami next weekend. He says that the Seminoles are in his top four after the official visit.

"Definitely one of the higher ones I'll say," Mincey said. "I'll say top four."

With the big three among the schools involved in his recruitment, Mincey described why Florida State is near the top of his list.

"The other schools, they have the flash and all that but this it’s just close-knit," Mincey said. "Can’t beat that.”

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound safety is regarded as the No. 82 overall prospect, the No. 5 S, and the No. 13 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2024 class.
