How the New College Football Playoff Model Effects Georgia Football

The College Football Playoff format received a major update ahead of the 2024 season. Here is how it affects the Georgia Bulldogs

The College Football Playoff system received a major update regarding its format for the upcoming 2024 season as it was announced that the 12-team playoff would feature the five highest-ranked conference champions combined with seven at-large teams selected by the committee.

"Under the 12-team playoff format that begins this fall, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team. (The team ranked #5 will host #12; team #6 will meet team #11; team #7 will play team #10; and team #8 will meet #9.) The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in the New Year's Six bowl games, the national championship game will continue to be at a neutral site. No conference will qualify automatically and there will be no limit on the number of participants from a conference."

The main contrast in the new format means that there will be one more "at large" spot available in the playoff. This means that it will now become even easier for teams that did not win their conference to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

One of the beneficiaries of this decision is the Georgia Bulldogs. A team that has finished each of their last three regular seasons with a 12-0 record and appeared in two of the three last national championships. The latest update to the playoff provides an even bigger incentive for the Bulldogs to win the SEC Championship but makes the punishment for not doing so much less detrimental to their chances at reaching the playoff.

The Georgia Bulldogs were already in good standing with previously adopted 12-team playoff format. However, with the new updates and stipulations, the Bulldogs' chances of being selected for the College Football Playoff and possibly winning the national championship have become that much more likely.
