Georgia's Biggest Spring Practice Surprises

In this story:
The Georgia football program is about halfway through spring practice which means they have a better idea of who certain players are at this point and how the team is shaping up for the 2023 season. That also means there have been surprises in regard to freshmen who have really impressed, the way some position battles have been shaking out and how players and how players continue
Here are the biggest Georgia spring practice surprises thus far:
Lawson Luckie
It was a known fact that Georgia was going to be immensely talented at tight end this season heading into spring. Many are eager to see what a third year looks like for Brock Bowers and how Oscar Delp will perform as his role expands, but arguably the biggest surprise in that room has been freshman Lawson Luckie.
Luckie was part of Georgia's 2023 recruiting class and was the second tight end to commit for the Bulldogs in that class along with Pearce Spurlin. Unfortunately for Spurlin, he broke his collarbone earlier this spring which has given Luckie more opportunity, and he has taken advantage of it. Sources indicated to Dawgs Daily that Luckie had multiple touchdowns in Saturday's scrimmage, including a long breakaway run after the catch. The Bulldogs knew they had two really good tight ends going into 2023, but that area of the depth chart is looking extremely deep halfway through spring.
The Battle at Cornerback
One of the biggest questions heading into spring this year for Georgia was who would earn the starting role alongside Kamari Lassiter at cornerback. The biggest surprise at that position battle is the fact that there doesn't seem to be a clear front-runner just yet. During Saturday's scrimmage, Daylen Everette, Nyland Greene, Julian Humphrey, AJ Harris, and Smoke Bouie all got reps at corner.
It's still very much open for discussion as to who will win that job at the halfway point which means this last stretch of spring practice will be crucial for those that are in the midst of competing for the job. The Bulldogs have a lot of options to work with at that spot, so it will be interesting to see who can separate themselves from the rest of the pack and earn that starting spot.
Oscar Delp
It's been a great spring thus for Georgia's tight end group, and Delp is a big reason why. The biggest surprise for the sophomore tight end has been his willingness to expand his role. Georgia lost a valuable offensive threat as both a blocker and a pass catcher in Darnell Washington, and Delp has put in the work to take on the role of being a tight end who can put his hand in the dirt and do the dirty work.
This comes as a surprise because Delp has never been a football player that has been asked to be an end-of-line blocker. This is a player who was a 4.52 runner coming out of West Forsyth high school and who spent most of his youth dominating the lacrosse field. Now in his second year at Georgia though, Delp has bulked up so that he can expand his role as a tight end and that's great news for the Bulldogs.
Roderick Robinson
Robinson was the only running back that Georgia took in the 2023 class and he has gotten a lot of run this spring due to the Bulldogs being pretty banged up at that position. Kendall Milton got shut down for the remainder of spring, Daijun Edwards has been dealing with an injury, and Andrew Paul is still recovering from his ACL injury. It has allowed Robinson to get a lot of reps this spring.
While Milton, Edwards, and Branson Robinson look to be the next trio for Georgia at running back, R. Robinson has been flashing this spring and has really impressed earlier than expected. He's got quite a few names still ahead of him on the depth chart, but it's always good to have some extra depth at running back.
